US Military Conducts Deadly Attack in Pacific, Leading to Four Deaths
According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US military executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement comes a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered growing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's current government.
