UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
