A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated boats carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of 9 crew members, as stated by a official statement.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and communication devices," an official for the convoy said.

The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That boat, called "a new Granma" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bicycles and provisions.

Broader Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with more than 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Political pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with comments from various representatives emphasizing the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Responding to recent proposals, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that early stages of talks commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces said it was committed to using all of the resources at its reach to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the sailors.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
