The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
