Last year, star Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by official channels that, domestically, it reads as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure version of the president. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. Although he is called a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with no shortage of candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• His list featured several politicians, among them an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• Per an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A property developer close to the process stated the primary requirement was manageability and loyalty, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Experts agree that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his “recruitment work” in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not involved with actual agent work.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by the actor's debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by viewers there, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who remains unseen directly. He is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
