Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
