Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators versus Parent Company
This latest development escalates the continuing conflict between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
The founder revealed how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy was compromised following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
