Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned UK Equipment to Find Afghans Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told
A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities failed to secure sensitive technology enabling the militant group to track down local individuals that had served with allied troops.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger
The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.
MPs are looking into the Conservative government's management of a serious breach of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to relocate to Britain to avoid militant rule.
How the Leak Was Discovered
A data file with confidential details, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally relative details, was mistakenly released by an official working at special operations center in early 2022.
The incident came to light in late 2023, when details of several individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain surfaced on social media.
Militant Technology
It appears there is a false assumption that militant forces are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can trace you down to within metres. That's precisely what specialized teams did.”
During testimony about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”
Aftermath of the Security Lapse
Initial findings presented to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty relatives and associates of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.
A legal restriction regarding the incident was implemented in last year and prevented all details regarding the matter from being made public until recently.
Safety Measures
Given injunction limitations, the source and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. These represented the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would lead to them being traced,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the obtaining of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.
“The important fact is that affected people are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”
The source explained terrible treatment suffered by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.
“Instances include four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
