Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
