A Special Release Pikachu Promo Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

Marking the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring exclusive items. Fans will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the institution's theme. For collectors, however, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. This shop is scheduled from on-site at the museum to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a highly anticipated tome packed with stunning artwork that show Pokémon in their natural habitats. It's essentially like the kind of research an in-world scientist could produce after adventurers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin might have created if the Galapagos were populated by flying-types instead of finches. A key appeal lies in the book's scholarly treatment, presenting Pokémon as worthy of scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company special edition cards for big events and brand collaborations. A lot of these promotional cards typically highlight the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest museum card however, is the unusually large dimensions. While exact measurements have not been immediately shared, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with fans able to get just one card per purchase.

Limiting Reseller Activity

According to an official announcement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be specific stores in the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to purchase this promo through the online Pokémon Center. While speculator demand is a given, the setup suggests they will have trouble stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. For those unable to attend, consider an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City later this year.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and its online store, which covers these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists dedicated to scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," it notes.
