Based on figures released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have lost their lives while in custody beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has reported that the actual figure is likely considerably larger, because of hundreds of missing individuals from Gaza.

Israeli defense forces last updated data on custodial deaths for May 2024, and correctional authorities by September 2024. Investigators identified another 35 casualties in detention after these dates and validated them with government bodies.

Despite the total number of casualties charted being substantially larger than earlier projections, it likely omits the complete extent of Palestinian loss, as stated by the director of the prisoner monitoring division.

“While we are offering documentation for a higher number of fatalities than once estimated, this is an incomplete account,” he explained. “We are certain that there are still detainees who perished in custody that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Deaths

Restricted government records shows that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who perished in jail were civilians, according to a simultaneous investigation.

By May of this year, a defense forces registry tracking all fighters in Gaza, a roster of more than 47,000 named individuals, listed just 21 deaths in detention. By that date, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in prison.

Prison Situation

Assault, mistreatment, and other abuse of detainees from Palestine has become routine across Israel’s jail system throughout 24 months of conflict. High-ranking authorities have openly admitted inadequate food and an below-ground detention center holding Palestinian individuals who are kept in darkness.

Institutionalized Cruelty

“As long as these measures remain in effect, all Palestinian detainees in custody is at peril, also the healthy ones, also the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Some deaths in detention have been widely reported, including a 50-year-old medical chief who died in prison after four months in confinement.

An inmate held with the deceased reported that he was brought to the exercise area by correctional officers just prior to his demise, clearly wounded and naked from the lower body. His body has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who perished in Israeli custody remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military provided researchers with the figure of casualties in custody, and basic other details including the location where they died, but excluding the detainees’ identities.

Documentation Problems

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily individuals from Gaza, investigators were unable to correlate the limited information provided by officials to a fatality documented by rights organisations, via statements from freed prisoners or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families may not know about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinian individuals it is confining. Over half a year at the beginning of the hostilities, the armed services declined to give fundamental details about the condition of thousands of persons detained in Gaza, in effect enacting a practice of involuntary missing persons, according to the advocacy organization.
